KUALA LUMPUR: The rift in PAS widened to a more serious level when 10 of the party’s MPs signed a statement throwing their support behind their spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, the strongest opponent to unity talks with Umno.
They called for closer ties with fellow Pakatan Rakyat parties DAP and PKR and rejected any cooperation with Umno.
PAS MPs (seated from left to right) Khalid Abd Samad, Kamaruddin Jaafar, Dr Hatta Ramli, Dr Lo’Lo’ Ghazali, (standing from left) Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa, Dr Dzulkifli Ahmad, Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud and Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff at the press conference at the Parliament lobby Thursday.
Other developments yesterday:
- Nik Aziz said he is calling for an emergency meeting which will include party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and Nasharudin, both supporters of unity talks;
- DAP chairman Karpal Singh echoed Nik Aziz, calling on Hadi and Nasharudin to either stop unity talks or quit the party;
- Other Pakatan party leaders scrambled to mitigate the damage caused by the feud, saying they hoped to meet with PAS leaders to discuss the crisis.
